If your door has an early type of multi-point locking system, for insurance purposes you may need an upgrade to a modern system.
The earlier mechanisms have the single locking cylinder, incorporating multiple locking points, but the system is comparatively simple using just a few rollers and a latch. Nowadays, UPVC locking mechanisms use many hooks and deadbolts to secure the door into the frame.
The alignment between the door and the frame is critical in order to avoid locking problems. If you are experiencing difficulties with your lock then there may be a possibility of the lock or gearbox failing. If the door is closed and will not open then this is potentially expensive to fix.
How can you check the lock? Open the door, lift the handle then turn the key. Hopefully, the lock will operate smoothly. Trying this again with a closed door should not result in an upwards forcing movement of the handle.
You are aiming to feel just a little more resistance when you raise the handle on the closed door. This means that the door is in its correct alignment.
